Weeklong rainstorms in Chile blamed on El Nino kill at least 10 and trigger flash floods

Weeklong rainstorms linked to El Niño have caused one of Chile’s worst weather disasters in decades, killing at least 10 people and leaving more than 100,000 residents cut off by flash floods. Authorities are working to reach communities affected by overflowing rivers and damaged infrastructure, with the northern regions of Atacama and Coquimbo among the hardest hit. The storms have caused widespread damage to homes, roads and public services, while rescue teams continue emergency operations as heavy rainfall and flooding remain a threat
