Carney to intensify trade talks with Trump, warns all options on table

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says he and US President Donald Trump have agreed to step up trade negotiations after the US announced plans to impose 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian imports. While Carney hopes to reach a comprehensive trade agreement, he warned Canada is prepared to consider all options if the tariffs take effect. The move has drawn strong criticism from Canadian leaders, with several provinces vowing to keep restrictions on US alcohol imports in place and calling for a firm response. Trump defended the tariffs, claiming Canada relies heavily on the US economy, while also threatening additional tariffs over wildfire smoke. The proposed tariffs, which could affect nearly 20 billion US dollars worth of Canadian goods, have also been criticized by US lawmakers and business groups, who warn they could hurt both countries’ economies.
