Hungary builds battery storage to support renewable energy expansion

Hungary is expanding its renewable energy sector with one of its largest battery storage projects in more than a decade, helping the country manage growing solar and wind power.

Located near Győr in western Hungary, the battery facility operated by ALTEO Group uses lithium-ion batteries from China’s CATL. It can store nearly 100 megawatt-hours of electricity and respond to changes in energy demand within milliseconds, storing extra solar power during the day and releasing it during peak hours at night.

As Hungary plans to increase wind power and expand renewable energy, experts say battery storage will become increasingly important in keeping the electricity grid stable and making clean energy available whenever it is needed.
