China’s 2026 summer movie season has surpassed 3 billion yuan (about $440 million) in box office revenue, including advance ticket sales, according to ticketing platform Maoyan.
The milestone was driven by strong performances from new releases, especially “Kung Fu Soccer,” which earned more than 655 million yuan within its first four days in theaters. The comedy has become one of the biggest hits of the summer season so far.
With the summer holiday period underway, Chinese cinemas are seeing increased audiences as a wide range of films, including comedy, animation, action, science fiction and historical dramas, enter the market. Upcoming releases such as “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and other Chinese productions are expected to further boost the season’s box office performance.
