DR Congo Ebola outbreak intensifies as the risk of spread to South Sudan grows

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is worsening, with 1,963 confirmed cases and 719 deaths reported as of July 12. The outbreak has spread across five provinces, raising concerns that the virus could reach more densely populated areas and neighboring South Sudan.

Health officials are particularly worried after new cases were confirmed near the South Sudan border. The World Health Organization estimates there is a 70% chance the virus could spread into the country, where limited healthcare capacity could make containment more difficult.

Aid agencies say the outbreak has not yet peaked, warning that insecurity, restricted access to affected areas and incomplete contact tracing continue to hamper response efforts and increase the risk of further transmission.
