China lodges serious protest over Japan’s remarks on ‘South China Sea arbitration award’

China has lodged a formal protest with Japan over its remarks on the 2016 South China Sea arbitration ruling, accusing Tokyo of interfering in regional affairs and undermining peace and stability.

China’s Foreign Ministry summoned a senior Japanese diplomat, saying Japan has no standing to comment on the South China Sea because of its wartime history and accusing Tokyo of applying double standards and distorting facts. Beijing also said it would firmly safeguard its territorial sovereignty and maritime rights.

During the meeting, China also raised concerns over issues including Taiwan, abandoned Japanese chemical weapons left in China after World War II, comments by Japanese lawmakers on China’s ethnic policies, and Japan’s recent military and security policies.
