The Trump administration has launched its first major investigation into alleged abuse of the H-1B visa program, with the US Labor Department’s inspector general confirming that dozens of subpoenas have already been issued as part of the probe.
The H-1B visa allows US companies to hire highly skilled foreign workers and is widely used by major technology firms. The investigation follows President Donald Trump’s efforts to tighten the program, including a 2025 order raising the H-1B sponsorship fee to $100,000 over concerns of misuse. However, a federal judge blocked the fee increase in June 2026, ruling that the administration lacked the authority to impose it.
