Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday called for faster progress toward high-level self-reliance in science and technology, saying innovation must play a stronger role in advancing Chinese modernization.
Speaking at a national science and technology conference in Beijing, Xi described the 2026–2030 period as a critical stage for strengthening China’s scientific capabilities. He urged greater investment in frontier fields including artificial intelligence, quantum technology, life sciences, advanced manufacturing and semiconductor development, while stressing the need to accelerate the commercialization of research breakthroughs.
Xi also called for stronger support for young scientists, improved intellectual property protection, more efficient use of research funding and deeper integration between scientific innovation and industry.
During the meeting, Xi presented China’s top 2025 science and technology award to researchers Chen Liquan and Ben De in recognition of their contributions to the country’s scientific development. A total of 258 projects and 11 scientists were honored at this year’s national science and technology awards.
