Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez criticized U.S. sanctions against Cuba during a United Nations General Assembly debate, accusing Washington of carrying out long-term pressure that has worsened economic and humanitarian problems on the island. He said the sanctions have affected daily life, limited development and created hardship for many Cuban citizens.
The United States opposed reopening the discussion, calling it an unnecessary use of UN resources, but the UN General Assembly voted to continue the debate with 136 countries in favor, 9 against and 30 abstentions. Rodriguez urged the international community to defend international law and said Cuba remains committed to peace and dialogue.
