NATO summit opens in Ankara as new defense deals fuel militarization concerns

NATO leaders opened their summit in Ankara, Türkiye, with a Defense Industry Forum focused on boosting weapons production and military cooperation. NATO announced new initiatives, including a 40-billion-dollar investment in drone and counter-drone technology, expanded joint weapons production, and new programs to strengthen transport, refueling and space capabilities.

The plans come as NATO continues to push member countries to increase defense spending to 5% of GDP by 2035. The move has sparked protests across Türkiye, with demonstrators arguing that governments should prioritize public services over higher military spending.
