China’s Tianwen-2 spacecraft has reached asteroid 2016 HO3 after a journey of about 400 days covering roughly 1 billion kilometers, according to Chinese space authorities. The probe has begun scientific exploration and recently captured close-up images of the asteroid from about 20 kilometers away.
Scientists say the mission will study the asteroid’s shape, composition, and internal structure as part of preparations for a future sample return to Earth. Tianwen-2 is China’s first asteroid sample-return mission, launched in May last year, and marks an important step in the country’s deep-space exploration program.
