Rescuers in Venezuela have pulled a 44-year-old man alive from the ruins of a collapsed shopping mall in La Guaira more than a week after powerful earthquakes hit the country’s northern coast. The man, a security guard, survived for days trapped in unstable rubble and was reached after rescue teams dug two tunnels to reach him. International rescue teams from several countries helped in the operation. He was taken to hospital after being freed on Thursday. Authorities say the earthquakes, which struck nearly eight days ago, have killed at least 2,595 people and left more than 12,000 injured, while search and rescue efforts are still continuing.
