China has officially launched its first AI data center powered entirely by directly connected renewable energy in Zhongwei. The facility combines wind-powered electricity with advanced liquid-cooling technology, allowing it to run on 100% green energy while achieving a highly efficient Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15.
The project supports China’s “Eastern Data, Western Computing” initiative, which shifts data-intensive computing to western regions with abundant renewable energy. Officials say the center will provide sustainable computing power for AI and the digital economy while reducing energy consumption.
The new data center is also expected to boost demand for AI chips, servers, and liquid-cooling equipment, strengthening China’s growing AI infrastructure and supporting industries undergoing digital transformation.
