The United States said on Thursday it had lifted its maritime blockade on Iran, while Tehran announced steps to reopen the Strait of Hormuz after the two countries signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing tensions.
The US military said all blockade operations have ended, though American forces will remain in the region to monitor the agreement. Iran said ships using the Strait of Hormuz will not have to pay transit fees for 60 days, with maritime traffic expected to gradually resume.
The MoU, signed digitally by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump, includes an immediate ceasefire and a 60-day period for negotiating a final settlement.
However, uncertainty remains as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli troops would stay in southern Lebanon. Iran warned that continued fighting there could threaten the peace process, and analysts say the agreement remains fragile despite the breakthrough.
