At least four people were killed and several others were injured after Israeli drone strikes hit the town of Mayfadoun in southern Lebanon on Tuesday, according to Lebanon’s state-run news agency.
The attacks targeted two vehicles in the Nabatieh area. One strike hit a vehicle in Mayfadoun, and a second strike followed after residents gathered at the scene, raising the death toll and injuring several people.
The violence comes just days after Iran and the United States announced a peace memorandum expected to help end fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday that Israeli forces would remain in security zones in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza for as long as necessary.
Meanwhile, displaced residents have started returning to southern Lebanon following news of the US-Iran deal. The United Nations said the number of people staying in emergency shelters has fallen in recent days, though it remains unclear how many returns are permanent as security concerns persist.
