US-Iran deal promises end to war, but how it will work remains unclear

The US–Iran interim deal to end the Middle East conflict is facing growing skepticism, with shipping firms warning it could take weeks for confidence to return even if the Strait of Hormuz reopens.

President Donald Trump said a preliminary agreement had been signed and would be followed by detailed negotiations in Switzerland on Friday, but officials in both Washington and Tehran stressed that a final ceasefire is still not secured.

Key disputes remain unresolved, including Iran’s nuclear program, missile capabilities, and regional proxy activity. Shipping companies say they will only resume normal transit through Hormuz once safety is fully credible.

Analysts also warn that tensions in Lebanon, where Israel and Hezbollah continue to clash, could undermine the deal. While US officials say Israeli withdrawal is not part of the agreement, Iran insists hostilities must stop for the deal to hold.

European allies have also raised concerns about the US negotiating team’s experience, casting doubt on whether a lasting agreement can be reached within the 60-day framework.
