The European Union and Ukraine have officially opened the first cluster of accession negotiations, known as the “fundamentals” cluster, marking an important milestone in Ukraine’s effort to become an EU member.
The cluster focuses on key areas that form the foundation of EU membership, including the rule of law, fundamental rights, democratic institutions, public administration reform and economic criteria.
According to the Council of the European Union, the “fundamentals” cluster is especially significant because it is the first chapter to be opened and the last to be closed during the accession process. This means Ukraine’s progress in these areas will be closely monitored throughout the negotiations.
The move represents a new stage in Ukraine’s long-term goal of joining the EU, with further negotiations expected as the country continues aligning its laws and reforms with EU standards.
