From Uganda to UN: How China promotes human rights through development

Uganda’s agricultural modernization, supported through a China–FAO cooperation project, has helped transform farming practices since 2012, introducing hybrid rice and improved crop varieties that have significantly increased yields and benefited around 70,000 farmers.
The example is presented within a broader discussion at the 2026 Forum on Global Human Rights Governance in Beijing, where participants emphasized development as a foundation for human rights. Chinese officials and scholars highlighted the “right to development” as central to improving living standards, citing poverty reduction, expanded healthcare, and international cooperation projects as evidence of how development-oriented policies are being used to advance human rights globally.
