A magnitude 7.8 earthquake off the southern coast of Mindanao in the Philippines has killed at least 45 people, left 17 missing and injured 487, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said Wednesday.

Authorities reported that more than 33,000 households—affecting nearly 150,000 people—have been impacted, with over 41,000 residents displaced. The quake also damaged 238 infrastructure facilities, including hospitals, schools and bridges, as well as nearly 3,000 homes. More than 1,700 aftershocks have been recorded since the main tremor struck, and search-and-rescue operations are ongoing.

The worst-hit areas include Sarangani and South Cotabato provinces and General Santos City, where many of the casualties were caused by landslides, drowning, and collapsing structures. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said the quake occurred at a depth of 33 km off Maasim town in Sarangani
