Casualties continue to rise after strong quake in S. Philippines

At least 37 people have died and around 500 others were injured after a powerful 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck southern Philippines on Monday, according to authorities.

The quake triggered landslides, drowning incidents, and structural collapses, with 14 deaths reported in Sarangani Province after a landslide buried homes. More than 8,600 schools were affected, disrupting education for over 4 million students, while about 864,000 households lost power. Property damage in General Santos alone has been estimated at 1 billion pesos (about $16.2 million). The earthquake struck off the coast of Maasim in Sarangani at a depth of 33 kilometers.
