[Nay Pyi Taw, June 8, 2026]
The opening ceremony of “2026 Chinese Film Week” took place on Monday at J Cineplex (City Mall – Ottarathiri) in Myanmar’s capital, Nay Pyi Taw, with the aim of deepening the long-standing friendship and promoting cultural exchanges between China and Myanmar.
The film festival is jointly organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Yangon, Myanmar and China Media Group (CMG) to strengthen socio-economic and cultural ties between the peoples of the two countries.
The event opened with a screening of the critically acclaimed Chinese film Lighting Up the Stars.
The story follows Mo Sanmei, a man who inherits his father’s funeral parlor business despite feeling disillusioned with both his career and life. His outlook begins to change after he meets Wu Xiaowen, an orphaned girl. Although they are not related by blood, the two gradually form a deep familial bond through frequent disagreements, shared experiences, and mutual understanding. The emotional and heartwarming drama received high praise from film enthusiasts attending the opening ceremony.
The festival will feature a curated selection of prominent, award-winning Chinese films. It aims to provide Myanmar audiences with a unique opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of China’s modern social development, its tangible and intangible cultural heritage, and the spirit of the Chinese people. All screenings will be open to the public free of charge from June 9 to 11.
