Around 10,000 people gathered outside Japan’s National Diet Building in Tokyo on Friday for an anti-war rally, protesting what they see as increasing militarization under Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi.
Protesters opposed plans to expand military capabilities, revise Article 9 of Japan’s Constitution, and increase defense cooperation with other countries. Many carried banners calling for peace and rejecting weapons exports.
The rally came a day after talks between Takaichi and Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos, during which Japan and the Philippines reportedly agreed to deepen defense cooperation, including plans for Japan to export destroyers to the Philippine Navy.
According to reports, similar protest events were held at about 150 locations across Japan.
