Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said it launched strikes on a US air base early Thursday in response to overnight US attacks near the southern Iranian city of Bandar Abbas.
According to Iranian media, explosions were heard near the Strait of Hormuz after US forces reportedly carried out strikes on what Washington described as a military threat to US forces and commercial shipping. US officials said the actions were defensive and that the ceasefire between the two countries remains in effect.
Iranian outlets reported the confrontation followed attempts by Iranian naval forces to stop vessels crossing the Strait of Hormuz without permission. Iran claimed one US-linked oil tanker was forced to turn back after warning shots were fired.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry condemned the US strikes, calling them violations of the ceasefire agreement and accusing Washington of threatening regional stability.
