The U.S. Space Force has awarded SpaceX a $2.29 billion contract to develop a secure global satellite communications network for military use, according to an announcement on Tuesday.
The project, called the Space Data Network (SDN) Backbone, will create a low-latency, high-capacity satellite system designed to connect military sensors, weapons platforms, and missile warning systems in real time. The Space Force said the system is intended to improve data sharing across defense systems and support future missile defense capabilities.
Under the contract, SpaceX is required to deliver a working prototype by the end of 2027. The network will be based on a proliferated low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation and will operate alongside other Pentagon space programs to form an integrated military communications architecture.
Officials said the system will combine commercial space technology with defense requirements to enhance global connectivity for U.S. military operations.
