The Ebola outbreak in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo has intensified sharply, with deaths rising to 204 and suspected cases reaching 867. The World Health Organization now rates the national risk as “very high,” while regional risk remains high and global risk low.
The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain with no approved vaccine, is concentrated in conflict-affected areas where insecurity and displacement are hindering response efforts.
Uganda has also confirmed additional linked cases, raising concerns about cross-border spread. Health agencies warn that up to 10 African countries could be at risk if containment efforts are not strengthened quickly.
