Cuban president says US indictment of Raul Castro is ‘political maneuver’ with no legal basis

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel on Wednesday dismissed US charges against Cuban Revolution leader Raúl Castro as a “political maneuver” with no legal basis.

Diaz-Canel said on X that the charges reflect “arrogance and frustration” toward the Cuban Revolution and its leadership. The comments came after a US federal grand jury in Florida indicted Castro over the 1996 downing of two planes operated by the exile group “Brothers to the Rescue.”

Diaz-Canel argued Cuba acted in “legitimate self-defense” after repeated violations of Cuban airspace by the Miami-based group. He said Cuba had issued multiple warnings to the US before the incident and accused Washington of distorting the events to justify hostility toward Cuba.

He also defended Castro’s legacy, calling him a respected revolutionary leader admired in Cuba and abroad.
