NASA’s Psyche mission spacecraft flew close to Mars to use the planet’s gravity as a “slingshot” to speed up and adjust its path toward the metallic asteroid 16 Psyche.
Launched in 2023, the probe is expected to arrive at the asteroid in 2029 and study it for about 26 months. Scientists believe Psyche may be the metal-rich core of an ancient destroyed protoplanet, made mostly of iron and nickel.
The mission is not about space mining. Its main goal is to help scientists better understand how rocky planets like Earth formed.
