The Sara Duterte impeachment trial formally began on Monday after the Philippine Senate convened as an impeachment court, Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano said.
The case follows the House of Representatives’ vote earlier this month to impeach Duterte, with charges including corruption, abuse of power, and alleged involvement in assassination plots. The articles of impeachment were officially transmitted to the Senate on May 13.
Under the Philippine constitution, a conviction would require a two-thirds vote in the Senate, which could result in Duterte’s removal from office and a lifetime ban from holding public position.
