Hostile environment in eastern DRC threatens Ebola response, UN says

A humanitarian crisis is worsening in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo as an Ebola outbreak spreads amid ongoing insecurity, the United Nations warned on Monday.

The outbreak, centered in Ituri province, has so far recorded hundreds of suspected cases and dozens of deaths, with additional infections reported in nearby areas including Goma in North Kivu. Aid agencies say violence, displacement, and limited access are severely disrupting efforts to trace contacts, monitor cases, and deliver medical support.

The World Health Organization has declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern, noting the high risk of further spread and the strain on already fragile health systems. The strain involved has no approved vaccine, increasing concern among health officials.

The UN has called for urgent international support, warning that funding gaps and restricted access could undermine containment efforts.
