Gilles Michaud was briefly detained and questioned by Israeli authorities after arriving at Ben Gurion Airport. Reports said he was held for about 45 minutes and questioned about a previous official visit to Gaza Strip that had already been coordinated with Israel.
Michaud later described the treatment as unusual for a senior United Nations official and canceled planned meetings in Israel following the incident.
Israeli officials later called it a case of mistaken identity, while the Israeli Foreign Ministry reportedly apologized and said the situation was caused by human error.
According to the UN, Michaud had traveled to Jerusalem to discuss Israel’s responsibility to protect UN personnel working in Gaza, the West Bank, and nearby areas. The incident comes as international attention remains focused on the ongoing conflict in Gaza and the humanitarian situation in the region.
