What does the MV Hondius outbreak tells us about hantavirus?

The cruise ship MV Hondius recently arrived in Tenerife, Spain, following a hantavirus outbreak that resulted in nine confirmed cases and three deaths. The infection was identified as the Andes virus (ANDV), a specific strain capable of human-to-human transmission, though typically only through prolonged close contact. The outbreak originated after passengers participated in a birdwatching expedition in South America, an area known for rodents carrying the virus.
While hantaviruses are a known family of pathogens transmitted through contact with rodent waste, the ANDV strain is particularly notable for its respiratory impact and potential for person-to-person spread. There is currently no specific cure, with treatment focusing on supportive care like oxygen therapy or dialysis. To manage the risk, several countries have implemented quarantine periods of up to 42 days for returning passengers to account for the virus’s long incubation period.
Despite the localized tragedy and the evacuation of over 90 passengers under strict health precautions, the World Health Organization and medical experts emphasize that the broader public health risk remains low. Authorities are urging calm, noting that while the setting of this outbreak is unusual, the virus itself is long-existing and manageable through standard protective measures and rodent control.
