The Philippine House of Representatives voted on Monday to impeach Vice President Sara Duterte, securing 255 votes in favor—well above the constitutional threshold of 106. The articles of impeachment, which include accusations of corruption, assassination plots, and abuse of power, will now be transmitted to the Senate for trial. If convicted by a two-thirds majority in the Senate, Duterte will be removed from office and permanently barred from holding public position, potentially impacting her previously announced 2028 presidential bid.
Duterte was absent during the vote, as she is currently on an approved overseas trip through May 15. Her travels included a visit to The Hague to see her father, former President Rodrigo Duterte, who is currently in detention at the International Criminal Court. The Senate now holds the sole authority to decide the final outcome of the case.
