Samsung Electronics has announced it will discontinue sales of all home appliances in the Chinese mainland, including televisions and monitors, citing rapidly changing market conditions. Once a market leader, the company has seen its shares in the TV, refrigerator, and washing machine sectors drop significantly due to intense local competition and a slow response to evolving consumer needs. In 2025 alone, Samsung’s visual display and digital appliance divisions reported a combined operating loss of approximately $138 million.
Industry experts note that the rise of high-quality Chinese brands has largely displaced South Korean consumer electronics, forcing a strategic shift for the company. While Samsung is withdrawing from the consumer appliance market, it plans to maintain its smartphone and memory chip businesses in China. Moving forward, the company will focus its investments on upstream semiconductor manufacturing and high-tech innovation, aligning its local operations with advanced manufacturing priorities.
