What we know about hantavirus

The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed an outbreak of hantavirus aboard the cruise ship MV Hondius in the Atlantic Ocean, resulting in three deaths and several illnesses. While investigators believe victims may have been infected before boarding, the WHO stated that human-to-human transmission during the voyage cannot be ruled out. An international response is currently underway to manage the situation as the vessel remains stationed near Cape Verde.
Hantavirus is typically transmitted to humans through contact with the waste or saliva of infected rodents. The virus can cause severe conditions affecting the lungs, heart, or kidneys, and while there is no specific cure, early supportive medical care is critical for survival. Health officials emphasize that prevention relies on strict hygiene and minimizing human-rodent contact through proper sanitation and the sealing of entry points in living and working spaces.
