The United Nations has welcomed separate unilateral ceasefires announced by both Ukraine and Russia.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said the organization hopes both truces are successfully implemented and repeated Secretary-General António Guterres’s call for a full, immediate, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire leading to a sustainable peace.
Russia announced a temporary ceasefire for May 8–9 around Victory Day, while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine would begin its own ceasefire starting May 6, though without a specified end date.
Previous temporary truces, including one during Orthodox Easter, were unsuccessful, with both sides accusing each other of violations.
