Tensions in the Gulf rose sharply after the United States launched “Project Freedom” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran had effectively closed during ongoing conflict with the US and Israel. The US said it destroyed Iranian boats and intercepted missiles and drones, while Iran denied losing vessels and claimed it was responding to an approaching American destroyer.
The conflict spread when the United Arab Emirates reported Iranian missile and drone attacks, including a strike that caused a fire at an oil facility in Fujairah and injured three people. The UAE condemned the attacks, while Iran blamed US military actions for escalating the situation.
The strait is one of the world’s most important energy shipping routes, and analysts warned that US attempts to force ships through militarily could risk a wider regional conflict.
