The Australian government said Meta, Google, and TikTok could face multimillion-dollar charges if they do not pay local media outlets for news content on their platforms.
Under the proposed News Bargaining Incentive, the companies would be taxed 2.25% of their Australian revenue unless they negotiate payment deals with news organizations. The funds would support Australian journalism.
Communications Minister Anika Wells said big digital platforms should contribute fairly since many people now get news through social media and search platforms.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese defended the proposal, saying Australia will act in its own national interest despite possible pushback from the United States. Major Australian media companies, including Nine Entertainment, Australian Broadcasting Corporation, and News Corp Australia, supported the move, calling it important for the future of local journalism.
Meta and Google criticized the proposal, calling it effectively a digital services tax.
