China has unveiled a new AI-powered carbon emission accounting model, described as the world’s first comprehensive system covering emissions from production, consumption and natural sources. Developed by the Shanghai Advanced Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the model aims to improve accuracy and efficiency in tracking global carbon flows.
Using generative AI and large language models, the system addresses key limitations of traditional methods, such as complex data processing and low precision. It includes multiple intelligent agents capable of tasks like lifecycle analysis, trade-related emissions tracking and industrial system optimization.
Early results show the model can significantly adjust national emission estimates and highlight discrepancies in existing global frameworks. It is expected to support China’s climate goals, carbon market development and international climate negotiations, while contributing to more accurate and equitable global carbon accounting.
