The United States and Iran are set to hold talks in Pakistan following a 14-day conditional ceasefire mediated by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.
The negotiations, expected to take place in Islamabad, will focus on key issues including navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, sanctions relief and the potential withdrawal of US forces from the region. While Washington has not confirmed in-person participation, discussions are ongoing.
The ceasefire was announced by Donald Trump shortly before a deadline he had set for Iran to reopen the strategic waterway. He said the agreement depends on ensuring safe passage through the strait and expressed optimism about reaching a broader long-term peace deal.
Iran, which has presented a 10-point proposal, described the outcome as a strategic victory and called for measures including sanctions removal, recognition of its nuclear rights and a full US military withdrawal. Iranian officials also confirmed that safe transit through the Strait of Hormuz would be maintained during the ceasefire period.
The truce is reported to include Israel’s participation, though tensions remain, with continued reports of missile activity shortly after the announcement.
