A major China-backed solar power project, developed by China General Nuclear Power Group, has begun grid-connected operations in Laos, marking a significant milestone in regional clean energy cooperation.
The project, with a first-phase capacity of 1 gigawatt, is the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and Laos’ first large-scale mountainous photovoltaic facility. Once fully operational, it is expected to generate 1.65 billion kilowatt-hours annually, reducing coal use and cutting carbon emissions.
Supported by cross-border power infrastructure, the project enhances energy connectivity between China and Laos while involving both Chinese and local companies, with further expansion of clean energy development planned across the country.
