Donald Trump on Thursday signed an executive order imposing a 100% tariff on certain imported patented pharmaceuticals and related ingredients, citing national security concerns. The tariffs will take effect from July 31, 2026.
Under the policy, companies with approved plans to shift production to the US will face a lower 20% tariff initially, rising to 100% by 2030. Meanwhile, countries with trade agreements—such as Japan, the European Union, and the Republic of Korea—will face reduced tariffs, while Britain will have a lower rate.
Generic drugs, biosimilars, and some specialized treatments, including nuclear medicines and gene therapies, are exempt from the new tariffs for now.
