WhatsApp said an Italian surveillance company tricked about 200 users into downloading a fake version of its app designed to spy on them. The campaign, carried out by ASIGINT, a subsidiary of northern Italy-based SIO, relied on deception to get victims—mostly in Italy—to install malicious software impersonating WhatsApp.
SIO, which works with law enforcement and government agencies, did not comment. This is the second time in 15 months that Meta has disrupted spyware activity in Italy, following a 2025 scandal involving US firm Paragon.
