Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday called for society-wide participation in afforestation, emphasizing that a healthy ecological environment benefits all and requires collective effort.
Xi, also general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, made the remarks while joining a voluntary tree-planting activity in Beijing’s Changping District. He planted saplings, greeted the public, and spoke with children about learning, work, nature, and tree-planting activities, encouraging them to set high goals and become pillars of society.
Xi highlighted China’s sustained increases in forest area and stock volume, reductions in desertified land, and its status as the world’s fastest-growing greening country. He praised the new Ecological and Environmental Code for strengthening the legal basis for building a Beautiful China and stressed that afforestation remains key to this goal.
Marking the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–2030) and the 45th anniversary of the nationwide voluntary tree-planting campaign, Xi called for higher-quality greening programs, development of related industries, urban-rural coordination, and mechanisms to realize the value of ecological products.
