Senior officials from Roscosmos and NASA have entered discussions to potentially extend the operations of the International Space Station (ISS) beyond 2028. Sergei Krikalev, deputy director general of Russia’s state space corporation, noted on Friday that while current plans secure the station through 2028, and American segments are qualified through 2030, both nations are seeking a “smooth transition” to future orbital platforms.
The extension is viewed as a strategic necessity for the development of next-generation infrastructure. Krikalev explained that both Russia and the U.S. intend to use the ISS as an assembly point for new modular components that will eventually undock to function as independent stations. This news follows a February announcement from Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, who confirmed that Russia’s own national orbital station and its next-generation crewed spacecraft are both slated for deployment and initial flight in 2028.
