Chinese companies and researchers filed a record 22,031 patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO) in 2025, a 9.7% increase from the previous year. This pushed China to third place globally for the first time, accounting for 10.9% of all filings and making it the fastest-growing among the top 10 countries.
Digital communication led the filings, while transport and semiconductors saw the fastest growth. Huawei ranked second among all companies with 4,744 applications, and CATL placed 10th—marking the first time two Chinese firms entered the EPO top 10. Other companies like Xiaomi, ZTE, OPPO, and Tencent also ranked within the top 50.
Overall, the EPO received a record 201,974 applications in 2025, with computer technology—especially AI-related innovations—remaining the top field.
