White House border official Tom Homan said Sunday that ICE agents will help at busy airport security checkpoints amid a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shutdown that has lasted over a month.
Homan told CNN that ICE agents will assist at entrances and exits to ease TSA’s workload, as many officers have quit or called in sick while working without pay. Long security lines are affecting airports nationwide.
DHS blamed Democrats for the shutdown, saying unpaid TSA officers “can’t even afford gas to get to work.” Democrats countered, calling on Republicans to approve funding instead of deploying ICE agents. The Senate recently rejected the DHS funding bill for the fifth time, straining key operations including TSA, the Coast Guard, and FEMA.
