Boao Forum 2026: AI unlocks new potential for China’s ocean economy

The Boao Forum for Asia Annual Conference 2026 will be held from March 24–27 in Boao, Hainan Province, marking its 25th anniversary. Amid global tensions and economic fragmentation, the forum will focus on stability, with key themes including AI-driven innovation and low-carbon development.

Artificial intelligence is reshaping China’s ocean economy, especially shipping. Smart upgrades at Ningbo‑Zhoushan Port and Tianjin Port use robotics, 5G networks, and the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System to automate inspections and cargo handling, improving speed, safety, and accuracy. Many terminals are also shifting to renewable energy and low-carbon operations.

Green energy is driving coastal growth. Qingdao is expanding offshore wind and solar power, rapidly increasing renewable capacity and cutting emissions while supporting households and industry.

Qingdao is also advancing marine biomedicine through institutions such as Ocean University of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The city is developing marine pharmaceuticals and Antarctic krill resources as part of a broader “blue economy” strategy.

Meanwhile, Hainan is building a biomanufacturing hub using Free Trade Port policies, focusing on marine biotech, biopharma, agriculture, materials, and green energy, with plans for a marine biomanufacturing innovation center by 2026.
