Germany plans a major expansion of data center capacity to stay competitive globally, the digital affairs minister Karsten Wildberger said on Tuesday. By 2030, data center performance is to at least double compared to 2025, while AI capacities are to increase fourfold.
A policy package of 28 measures aims to make Germany a leading, sovereign data hub in Europe, including business taxes based on data center location, streamlined approvals, renewable energy use, and support for a commercial AI “gigafactory.” The strategy also seeks to reduce reliance on non-European tech companies, favoring German and European operators.
