Iran’s Supreme National Security Council confirmed that its secretary Ali Larijani was killed in an attack, according to Tasnim News Agency. A council statement said he died early Tuesday along with his son Morteza Larijani, security official Alireza Bayat, and several others. The council praised Larijani’s service and called for national unity against external threats.
Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel had killed Larijani during ongoing strikes on Iran. Separately, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps confirmed that Gholamreza Soleimani, head of the Basij volunteer force, was killed in a joint US-Israeli strike.
The deaths come amid rising regional tensions after US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28, followed by retaliatory attacks from Iran and its regional allies on Israeli and US targets across the Middle East.
