A devastating landslide in southern Ethiopia’s Gamo Zone has killed 107 people and displaced over 3,400, officials said Saturday. Heavy rains on Tuesday triggered the landslide, burying large areas, though rescue teams have pulled one survivor from the debris.
Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed visited the affected communities, offering condolences and pledging government support, while emphasizing the need for long-term planning and preventive measures. South Ethiopia Regional State head Tilahun Kebede warned residents to move to higher ground as rain continues.
Ethiopia has declared a three-day national period of remembrance starting Saturday.
